stands for a nano-laptop-tour concert in
three diferent locations in Portugal:
Lisbon, Setúbal and Porto with all
musicians using the laptop, as an
instrument for sound and/or visual
creation.
" Every acoustic musician knows this:
in order to turn the playing of an
instrument, or a group of
instruments, into an event,
something that have a party or a
comunity ceremony sense, it's
necessary that some electronic
equipment gives it a projection,
with the use of a microphonic and
amplifying system, a mixer and, at
least, a pair of speakers and
monitors. Amplifying signifies
turning things public, as we know
since the importance of the "sound
system" was verified in the Jamaica of
the years 1950, with the United
States, the Great Britain and the
rest of the electrified world waking
up for that new reality. Playing
live implies, since then, using a PA,
the means that allows a real
socialization of music. Technology
has developed very much in these 50
last years - with the first
synthesizers we stoped separating
the worlds of production and
reproduction of sounds, the great
wall computers turned smaller and
smaller, the concept of "sampling"
appeared in the scene, consisting,
basically, in the construction of a
sound based in another preexisting
sound, as it happened with synthesis,
this one giving completely new
sounds to nature. And we finally
arrived to the era of the laptop, a
little but powerful productor and
reproductor of sounds and
simultaneously an instrument and a "sound
system", considering that it can
have it's own mixing board and even,
if the user wants to, a "set" of
speakers. Te new gadget turned
personal, with the sufficient
dimensions to be transported at the
back, but at the same time it gained
a colective dimension, becoming, as
the electroacoustic composer Laurie Spiegel said, a folk instrument. The
planetarian festival Hip Chips
comemorates this comunal aspect -
dozens, hundreds, maybe thousands of
laptops functioning in a net through
the world, as it happens with so
many anonym people in several
continents that collects data from
outerspace to send it to NASA - and
the Portuguese concerts Laptop
Non-Stop have as purpose to turn
local an action thinked globally:
with this iniciative one thing is
certain, the portable computers will
not be used to government or
corporative activities, but as tools
of social freedom."
